台湾から印刻部 @print_and_carve_dept の @yuyulinnnnnn さんがファン・ソギョンさん原作『マテニ10号』の台湾版『鐵道家族 Mater 2-10』の版木を持って来てくれました。
印刻部が装画を担当したMater2-10の日本版をA3BCのメンバーの @kagemarutan と @an_aki_art が担当させて頂けたのは最高な偶然でした。
作家のファン・ソギョンさん、訳者の姜信子さん(@wildfrances_yuyantan )・趙倫子さんなど、錚々たる先生方と名前を並べる事ができて、改めて光栄に思います。
今年アジアの版画家達との旅で価値観が研ぎ直された今だからこそ、この装画を通して国家権力に彫刻刀の一太刀を刻めたのではないかと感じています。

マテニ10号
鉄道員一家四代の百年の物語

日本による植民地支配期に、川崎重工業で作られたマテニ（マテ2型）は、朝鮮半島に導入されると主に山岳地帯の多い朝鮮北部で運行された。「マテ」は山岳型機関車を意味する、マウンテン型の日本式略称。マテニ10号は朝鮮戦争当時、北進していた南側（大韓民国側）によって接収され、開城ー平壌の路線で運行されていた。
本書の構想は、著者が1989年に北朝鮮を訪れた際、かつて鉄道機関士として大陸を行き来していた老人に出会い、話を聞いたことから始まった。
近代の到来、そして日本による植民地支配の象徴であった鉄道。本書は、闘う産業労働者たちと鉄道員一家四代の、朝鮮半島における百年の物語である。

植民地期、また分断の時代の朝鮮半島における近代の歪み、その底辺と周縁に生きる者につねに眼差しを向け、独裁政権に抵抗の声をあげ、海外亡命、国内収監の経験も持つ著者は、リアリズムであると同時に、生者の声のみならず死者たちの声も響きわたる表現手法を本書で模索している。作品中に響きわたる複数の声は、 社会の周縁で声を奪われていた者たちの声である。
Yulin from the Taiwan-based collective Print and Carve Dept. brought the original woodblocks for the Taiwanese edition of the novel Mater 2-10 by Hwang Sok-yong.
It was the most wonderful coincidence that A3BC members RYOCK and AKI worked on the cover of the Japanese edition of Mater 2-10, without knowing that friends from Print and Carve Dept. worked on the Taiwanese edition.
We are humbled to have our names listed alongside such distinguished figures as the author Hwang Sok-yong and the translators Shinja Kang and Ryoonja Cho.
We are also grateful that we had this opportunity after having our values sharpened this year through travels with printmakers across Asia; a precious opportunity to wield a carving knife and raise art against colonial rule.
Mater 2-10
Built during Japanese colonial rule, the Mater Type 2 locomotive later ran on the Kaesŏng–Pyongyang line during the Korean War. Inspired by a 1989 encounter with a former railway engineer in North Korea, this book traces a century of Korean history through four generations of a railway family.
Attentive to twisted modernity, the author draws on his experiences of exile and imprisonment to give voice to those long silenced, letting both the living and the dead speak.
